MID 19TH CENTURY VERSE & FLORAL SPRAY SAMPLER BY ALICE OULSNAM AGED 13 - 1843

Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Alice Oulsnam aged 13 - 1843. This sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with an exquisite tied floral spray whilst the middle section contains the following verse
Jesus permit thy holy name to standThe humble effort of thy servant's handAnd while my fingers o'er this canvass moveEngage my youthful heart to seek thy loveWith thy dear children may I share a par...tAnd write thy name thyself upon my heart
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn which has Alice's details and the date of 1843 on either side of its topmost blooms then the whole piece is surrounded by a superb and intricately worked deep meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a scattering of faint pinkish stains in the verse area and through Alice's first name. The sampler is behind hand blown glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within an extremely good quality mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip, possibly original to the piece. Both are in good condition with the frame having some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and the slip with some small chips which reveal the gesso beneath. The original backing board has been replaced at a much later date and it would appear that sampler may well have been conserved at the same time. There are glimpses of later stitching down the left side of the linen which would suggest it has been tacked onto a new backing cloth.Measures 13" x 16" (sight size) and 18 1/2" x 21 1/2" including the frame.
