The Blanket strip is made of Buffalo Hide and features four roundels and multicolored geometric devices on a whit...e ground. The Strip retains its original silk ribbon strips that drop from the center of each roundel. The decoration is executed using chalk white, red white heart, dark blue, greasy yellow and pea green colored beads.
The original, blue wool Trade Blanket retains its original cloth binding which is wider on the top and bottom edge and thinner on the sides of the Blanket. It appears that the Blanket Strip is original to this Blanket and the Blanket and Strip are an important and wonderful Native American Artifact.
Over the past 39+ years we have been lucky enough to handle two or three 19th century Bead Decorated Blanket Strips but have never encountered an example affixed to its original Trade Blanket and never an example as well preserved as the one offered here. This Blanket Strip is stunningly beautiful and worthy of a place at the center of even the most advanced, museum quality collection!!

They are NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Sioux Bead Decorated Buffalo Hide Blanket Strip crafted in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century and affixed to its original, late 19th century Wool Trade Blanket. The Blanket Strip and Blanket come with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. This rare and original, 1880’s Sioux Indian Bead Decorated Hide Blanket Strip is in very good condition. The buffalo hide itself is well preserved – intact, supple and sound. and sound. The beadwork is beautiful and exceptionally well preserved with only a handful of beads lost at the very top edge of the strip. The Blanket Strip retains the majority of the silk ribbon drops that hang from the center of the roundels – two of the roundels retain all three multi-color ribbon drops while the other two roundels retain 2 of the three original silk ribbon drops. All elements of the Strip are original and there has been no repairs or restorations. The blue Wool Trade Blanket is intact but does have six areas of moth damage as can be seen in the scans below. Otherwise the blanket is well preserved – the blue color is dark and well preserved while the cloth binding is faded. Although the Blanket does have some moth damage, it displays beautifully and overall this Blanket and Blanket Strip are breath taking!!
