Franklin D. Roosevelt for United State Senator
New York 1914 U.S. Senate Democratic primary7/8" campaign button
This is a very, very rare pin from the 1914 New York U.S. Senate Democratic primary. In a little remembered chapter in FDR's life he ran for the seat of retiring Republican Senator Elihu Root of New York. Roosevelt won the backing of President Wilson's son-in-law and Treasury Secretary McAdoo, but faced a formidable op...ponent in the Tammany-backed James Gerard. Wilson needed Tammany's forces to help marshal his reform legislation and also to secure his 1916 re-election. FDR was soundly defeated in the Democratic primary by Gerard, who in turn lost the general election to a Republican.
The button is nicely centered in fine to excellent condition with no splits, foxing, cracks or other distractions. It has a Whitehead and Hoag backpaper and a nice, original pin.
This pin rarely comes up for sale or auction anywhere and no Roosevelt board is complete without it.
