Although quitesuccessful, both of these models had a couple of problems. Neitherallowed for scoring in front of the cutter—a benefit when doingrabbeting work across grain. And, both had conventional stationaryposition totes and knobs which frequently resulted in crackedknuckles when performing rabbeting work against a vertical surface. The 10 ¼ addressed both of these deficiencies. First, Stanley addedtwo heavy duty spurs. These were not the relatively flimsy model 78spurs but rather a new Bodmer patent (8/23/10) spur with a singlewide, slightly slanted cutting edge. This same spur was alsoutilized in the model 444 Dovetail plane. Providing for a tote andknob which could be moved either left or right of center to allow forclose rabbeting work was more difficult. This required a new designto the body casting ( i.e. the model 10 bodies couldn't just bemodified). Additionally, both the totes and knobs had to beredesigned to fit onto swiveling lock down nuts. This was anexpensive reworking of the old model 10 but definitely worth theeffort! Stanley ceased production of the 10 1/4 in 1942--along with a number of other models as production shifted to the War efforts.
This example is infantastic shape. The japanning is at least 97%, the lever cap hasmost of its shiny nickel plating. Both the rosewood tote and knobare without damage and the blade is near full length.
This plane is not onlya great addition to your shop, it is in collector's condition.
