Lie-Nielsen No. 4 Bronze Smoothing PlanePlane Sock and Original Box includedGreat Condition!
Sigh... I just don't get out to the shop very much anymore. So, I'm letting go of my beloved Lie-Nielsen No. 4 Smoothing Plane. As you might expect, I'm sorry to see it go, but I'd rather it have a good home than just sit on the shelf.
What I loved most about this plane is its perfect 'mid-size', a nice balance of weight and delicacy. It doesn't tire you out, but it gets the job done well....
This plane is in very good condition, well cared for and well stored. The auction includes the official Lie-Nielsen Plane Sock,  which really helps cut down on corrosion in a humid environment, along with the original box. The box is in very good condition; it has a few oil spots and scratches, but it did what a box is supposed to do.
Yes, the plane has some DNA on the surfaces. It was used well in a fine woodworking shop, after all. I've tried to take good pictures of the various details so that you can see exactly what you're getting.
The callouts I see are:
A couple of very light marks and one small ding on the front knob. For scale, the ding is shallow and about 3/16" along. There are some light scratches and pits on the side from normal use, nothing bad at all.  There is the typical light scratching on the sole, expected during normal use. Most is at a 30-45 degree angle. They are light enough to level out, if you care to do so. I wouldn't bother. You might want to re-bevel and re-sharpen the blade. I don't know what angle I left it at last time. It'll probably work just fine as it is, though. It is sharp at this time.In the pictures of the sole, you may see what looks to be a crack on the back-left edge. This is NOT a crack, just a slightly deeper scratch in the bronze that got lit up by the camera lights. Aside from that, there are no substantial dings, scrapes, or gouges to be seen. It's a wonderful piece of kit.
The L/N No. 4 currently retails for $350.
PayPal only. No early offers accepted. No local pickup. No returns, as this plane is fairly represented in both verbiage and pictures.
Any questions? If you're here, you know exactly what you're looking at: An heirloom quality tool in great condition. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Bench PlanesLie-Nielsen Bench Planes (except for the No. 1) are based on the Stanley Bedrock-type planes. Bedrocks were Stanley’s top line of Bench Planes, heavier and better made than the standard. In addition, the construction of the frog is unique — it features a fully machined fit between frog and body, adjustable from the rear without having to remove the blade and cap. This allows you to easily change the mouth setting from a coarse to fine cut for difficult woods or fine smoothing passes.
Geometry:All Bench Plane blades are bedded at 45° with the bevel down.
Blade Adjustment:To advance the blade, turn the adjuster nut clockwise. It is always a good idea to finish adjusting the blade by a forward adjustment to take up backlash and to prevent the blade from moving. In order to be able to adjust the blade easily, do not overtighten the lever cap screw.
Mouth Adjustment:To adjust the mouth opening, loosen the two locking screws at the back of the frog; then turn the middle adjuster screw. Observe the opening in front of the blade. When it is correct, set the locking screws again.
Chipbreaker:Our Chipbreaker is 1/8" thick. The raised lip under the bevel of the chip-breaker is back beveled 1° to ensure that the leading edge contacts the blade firmly. You should never need to dress this surface, but if you do, use a very fine stone and be sure to maintain the angle. The 25° bevel may be honed occasionally. For general work, set the end of the chipbreaker about 1/16" from the cutting edge of the blade; for the finest smoothing work, set it closer to the edge.
