Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:2811372 |
This Photograph was the person...al property of Buffalo Bill Cody and descended directly in the Cody family to his great-granddaughter Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow - granddaughter of Cody's daughter Irma.
In 1887 Arta Cody traveled with her father Buffalo Bill to Europe where Buffalo Bill’s Wild West performed for the season. Bill’s wife Louisa and his other daughter Irma did not make the trip and apparently Arta send this Photograph to her mother as a souvenir of Arta and Bill’s time in Europe.
This outstanding, Card Mount Photo measures approx. 8 1/8" by 5 1/2" and is mounted on its original 8 1/2” by 6 1/2” photographer’s card mount. The mount carries the mark of the Photographer – Ward of Baker St., Weybridge (England). This Photograph, from The Cody Family collection, pictures Buffalo Bill driving the large, four-in-hand carriage with his daughter Arta, Nate Salisbury and Salisbury’s wife. At the back of the carriage there is a group of well dressed but unidentified dignitaries. The Photograph is signed and inscribed at the lower left hand corner “To Mama / From / Arta / Aug 2, 1887”.
In 1887 Bill Cody took his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West to Europe for the first time. The Show spent the entire season in England and on the continent. This Photograph was taken in front of a rather stately looking building while the Show was in England (likely taken in London).
Provenance: This fantastic Photograph descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill Cody's last surviving child. Buffalo Bill and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921) had four children but only their two daughters - Arta (1866-1904) and the baby Irma (1883-1918) lived to adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow Sr. (1880-1918) and had 3 children - Frederick Harrison Garlow Jr. (1911-1985); William Joseph Garlow (changed name to Cody) (1913-1992) and Jane Cody Garlow (1909-1987). When Irma and Fred Garlow Sr. died within three days of each other during the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their Grandmother Louisa, wife of Buffalo Bill Cody. Fred Garlow Jr. married Margaret Southerland and they had two children Patricia Ann (b.1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952).
In 2014 the bulk of the Cody-Garlow Collection was sold at auction with Patsy holding onto her favorite Photograph of Bill and performers from the Show. With Patsy’s death last year, we were luck enough to purchase some of the most intimate, one of a kind Photos of Bill Cody which we will be offering over the next few weeks in our weekly eBay auctions.
The Photograph offered here was the property of Patricia Ann "Patsy" Garlow, Buffalo Bill's direct great-granddaughter. It was the property of the Cody-Garlow family and was originally the property of William F. “Buffalo Bill" Cody. This Photograph from the Cody-Garlow Collection spent most of the last half of the 20th century on loan to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center of the West, and there is an inventory number penciled on the back of the image.
This rare and wonderful, 1887 Western Americana / Buffalo Bill's Wild West Card Mount Photograph is in very good condition. The Photograph itself is generally crisp and clean with a few tiny spots of foxing and a short, tight tear the top of the building’s right archway. The Photo exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Card Mount has some light edge wear.
An exceptionally rare and original, 1887 William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody unpublished oversized Cabinet Card Photograph of Bill Cody driving a four-in-hand carriage with his young and beautiful daughter Arta Cody seated next to him and his partner Nate Salisbury and his wife seated behind. The Photograph is signed and inscribed by Arta Cody with a gift inscription to her mother – Louisa Cody. This Photo was a family Photograph that was previously the personal property of Bill and Louisa Cody - and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
