Very rare and original, ca1880’s Native American Southern Plains / Cheyenne Indian Bead Decorated Hide Medicine Bag / Pouch. This outstanding, late19th century Beaded Pouch measures approx. 4" long and 4" wide (at its widest point).
This wonderful Cheyenne Indian Beaded Pouch is made of a soft, brain tanned hide and is sinew and thread sewn by hand and beatures beadwork on both sides. One side features a tepee design executed in colors of chalk white and r...ed white heart on a translucent dark green field with greasy yellow lane border. The opposite side features a central cross design surrounded by three lane, moose tracks style vertical lines executed using colors of pea green, chalk white, translucent red, translucent dark blue and translucent green colored beads. The Pouch also has a delicate translucent red beaded border surrounding the edges.
The Medicine Bag / Pouch offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Southern Plains / Cheyenne Bead Decorated Hide Bag crafted in the late 19th century. This very rare and original, ca1880’s Southern Plains / Cheyenne Indian Bead Decorated Hide Pouch is in very good condition. The hide elements are supple with soiling as can be seen in the scans below. There is a short tear to the hide that enters the Bag at the center of the top edge (approx. 1” long. It appears that the tear was repaired a very long time ago but that repair has split and the tear is open again. The beadwork on both sides is very well preserved with the only bead loss being to a short section of the delicate, translucent seed bead border. Overall the Pouch is very well preserved and displays beautifully.
