Stanley No 4 Smooth Plane SW Type 12 1919-1924 Tuned. This one was another of my users for a long time that I’ve decided to pass on to someone else. I found it at an “Antique Store”, with a cracked tote, the label said “ Antique Wood Carver Broke industrial Decor”. It wasn’t broke it just needed the tote repaired which has been since taken care of. Solid repair that is not even noticeable. Has a wooden dowel running the length set with hide glue. It will not break. No break...s cracks chips or repairs to the body or frog. 90% original black japanning. The rosewood tote and knob have been re-lacquered and then hand polished to a silky smooth feel. This one is a type 12 and has the first Sweetheart trademark with “New Britain Conn USA” under the SW. only made in 1920 and 1921 and it has the Ghost SW logo on the back of the lever cap. She’s been tuned and ready to use. The lever cap and chip breaker have been lapped flat with their contact points to the iron to ensure a firm seat and reduce chatter. The near full length iron has been lapped flat on the back and then honed with a 10, 000 grit Ohishi Water Stone. Scary sharp and makes see through shavings in black cherry with a finish as smooth as glass. The frog adjustment tab and screw have been re-blued just as it would have been when it left the factory in New Britain 98 years ago. The back of the chip breaker retains is factory gun blue finish. The frog has been checked for rocking and sits firm and square on the body. The edges of the sole have been relieved to prevent marring of the surface. The edges of the iron have been relieved to prevent those pesky plane tracks. All screws have been lightly oiled and move freely. The plane has asked that the new owner not use her for “Decor”, I informed the plane that no respectable wood plane user would commit such a travesty and that she will surely find a home in a shop smoothing walnut, pine, cherry, or some sort of native hardwood or softwood.
