Wonderful and quite rare, 1919 Typed Letter Signed by future President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. This outstanding, hand signed Letter measures approx. 7 1/4” by 10 1/2” and is written on Roosevelt's Navy Department Stationary. The letter is dated April 1, 1919 and addressed to a “Dr. E. Lester Jones”. Ernest Lester Jones (1876-1929), was a hydrographic and geodetic engineer and Superintendent of the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. He was a r...egular correspondent and personal friend of FDR. Jones's career is notable for his resolution of the boundary dispute between the United States and Canada, concerning Alaska.
The Letter is written entirely on one side of a single page stationary with printed heading at the top that reads "Navy Department /Assistant Secretary’s Office / Washington". The signature of Franklin D. Roosevelt is dark and bold and beautiful as is the typewritten text.
It appears that the Letter was written by FDR to Jones acknowledging the receipt of Jones’ important work titled “Safeguard the Gateways of Alaska”. The full text of the Letter reads as follows:
”My dear Jones:
Very many thanks for the two copies of the publication “ Safeguard the Gateways of Alaska”. I will send one to Ensign Brown, as you suggest, and I know he will be glad to have it.

Washington, D.C.”
