Very rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1890’s Native American Santee Sioux Indian Bead Decorated Hide, Puzzle Pouch Medicine Bag. This outstanding, late 19th century Beaded Medicine Bag measures approx. 7" long and 3" wide (at its widest point).
This wonderful Santee Sioux Beaded Medicine Bag is thread sewn by hand with spot stitched beadwork decoration in the form of stylized flowers executed using pea green, dark blue, medium blue, red white heart, chalk ...white and greasy yellow colored seed beads. The Bag is trimmed with a delicate border using dark blue and chalk white seed beads. This fascinating Puzzle Pouch retains its original ten strand, “split thong” hide closure that forms the “puzzle” closure and its original flap closure. The Bag is made of a soft, brain tanned hide.
The origin of “Puzzle Pouches” is somewhat obscure but it appears that they originated in areas where there was contact with French Trappers. They are usually associated with the Iroquois but other Northern Plains peoples also made them. Most Puzzle Pouches were made in the early to mid 19th century. They get their name from the rather “puzzling” closure. While we have never encountered a Santee Sioux Puzzle Bag, the style of the floral decoration is distinctly Santee as can be seen in the scans below.

This very rare and very beautiful, ca1890’s Santee Sioux Bead Decorated Hide Puzzle Pouch is in excellent condition. The beadwork is very attractive and exceptionally well preserved with no loss or damage. All elements of the Medicine Bag are original and there has been no repairs or restorations.
