Item History and Pricing
|Handmade: No||Tribal Affiliation: Chippewa / Ojibwa|
This wonderful, Bead Decorated Breachcloth / Loincloth / Dance Apron is thread sewn by hand and is made ...of a medium weight, black wool trade cloth, trimmed with a black silk binding at the bottom edge and backed with a medium weight, linen / muslin fabric. The floral bead decoration is executed using Charlotte cut, translucent seed beads in colors of red, dark blue, green, colorless, orange, medium blue and black.
The Breachcloth / Dance Apron has a “net form” border at the top edge using turquoise colored bugle beads. The Breechcloth / Dance Apron is accompanied by a 1910’s Real Photo Postcard depicting a Chippewa Brave wearing a very similar Dance Apron with a nearly identical “net form” border at the top edge.
The Ojibwa Breachcloth / Loincloth / Dance Apron offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Anishinaabe / Ojibwa Breachcloth crafted in the late 19th century. The Breachcloth comes with our “no questions asked” return privilege and our lifetime guarantee of authenticity. It is guaranteed to be deemed authentic, original and as described by any qualified third party authentication service.
This rare and beautiful, ca1890’s Anishinaabe / Ojibwa / Chippewa, Bead Decorated Cloth Breachcloth / Dance Apron is in very good condition and display beautifully. The wool fabric elements are well preserved – clean and crisp - soft and supple with light surface wear only. The bead decoration is beautiful and generally well preserved with no loss to the floral decoration but with some loss to the “net Form” border at the top edge (see the scans below). The ribbon form ties that would have encircled the waist of the weared are significantly shortened as can be seen in the scans below. All elements of the Breachcloth are original and there has been no repairs or restorations.
