Estate find: Early 1945 Twenty Grand Cigarettes Pack . Series 115 Tax Stamp. A very popular Union-made "10 cent" brand of the depression era. Launched in 1931 and named after that year's Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner. Longtime endorsement by New York Giants Bill Terry (the last person to bat over .400 in the National League). The US Army "tent city"(Cigarette Camp) at Duclair, France (during the invasion of Europe) was named after this brand. Manufactured by the Axton-Fisher... Tobacco Company at Factory 24 District of Kentucky. Probably Axton-Fisher's final manufactured run or from leftover stocks, as Phillip Morris had taken advantage of Axton-Fisher's failing fortunes during wartime, launching a hostile takeover in late 1944. Phillip Morris' most prominent strategy was to eliminate competition to its house brands, by buying out its rivals, and then neglecting/letting the brand drift into oblivion. Twenty Grand cigarettes were still produced into the 1950's, albeit "re-badged" with the Phillip Morris' company/plant info, slowly disappearing into obscurity, before all production finally ceased.
Pack is in good (taut) shape (see photos). CONTAINS NO CIGARETTES. Inner wartime craft paper wrap is stuffed with old cotton gauze pads. Images/Colors still quite vivid. Nice example of forgotten tobacciana history.
