Small mid/late 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Anne McKidd. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1870 or slightly later. This little sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with the following verse
Farewell to HomeMy thoughts are with my native landMy heart is in my native placeWhere willows bend to breezes blandAnd kiss the rivers ripplin...g faceMy thoughts are with my youthful daysWhere sin and grief were but a nameWhen every field has golden waysAnd pleasure with the daylight came
 The lower section of the linen is stitched with Anne's name which has a fruit basket to the right and left. The whole piece is then surrounded by a zigzag floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby in places with a light crease across the centre and some small faint marks. There is also a pull running down from the word field in the verse. There are also a few very small areas of damage and a larger area at the centre of the bottom edge which has resulted in some stitch loss to the outer border. This shows that the sampler is placed directly onto card. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original mahogany frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the odd scratch, chip and scuff mark commensurate with their age and a paler patch on the top edge of the frame where it looks as though a label or something similar has been removed and pulled the varnish away. Measures 7 3/4" x 9" (sight size) and 10" x 11 1/4" including the frame.
