Very rare and stunningly beautiful, original ca1890’s Native American Sioux (or possibly Mandan) Indian Quill and Bead Decorated Hide Bag. This outstanding, late 19th century Sioux Quilled, Tab Flap Closure, Hide Bag / Pouch measures approx. 15" long (including the rawhide fringe) and 3 1/2" wide at its widest point.
This wonderful Sioux Bag is sinew sewn by hand with quilled roundel decoration on the front of the Bag and geometric quill designs on the bifu...rcated tabs of the flap closure. There are long, quill wrapped, rawhide drops from the flap tabs and the center of the quilled roundel and a delicate, greasy yellow seed bead trim to the edges of the flap. There are single, quill wrapped, rawhide drops affixed to the sides of the Bag at the top and these drops feature tin cone danglers with dyed feather inserts. Above the roundel on the front of the Bag, the surface is paint decorated with vertical lines of red pigment. The Bag retains its original rawhide hanger and is one of the most beautiful Sioux Hide Bags that we have had the pleasure to own in the past 40+ years.
We are unsure of the original purpose of this wonderful Hide Pouch – it may have held tobacco or may have simply been a Possible Bag. We would greatly appreciate any information that would help us more definitively identify this outstanding Sioux Pouch.

This very rare and very beautiful, ca1890’s Quill and Bead Decorated Sioux Bag is in very good condition and displays beautifully. There is an area of dry rot at the top of the back side of the Bag but this is stable and the remainder of the body of the bag is well preserved. The quillwork and beadwork is very well preserved with some fading to the color of the red quills and less than a handful of the tiny seed beads that trim the flap. There is some loss to the hand cut, rawhide fringe at the bottom edge of the Bag. Please see the scans below for a good representation of the outstanding form and the condition of this beautiful Sioux Bag.
