EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY MARY ANN HAROLD - C. 1835

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Ann Harold. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just stunning with very fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse, the title of which has a bird and fruit basket to each side, whilst the verse is underlined with a deep strawberry border

The middle section of the linen is stitched at the centre with a delightful red brick house with a row of flowers to either side of its steps followed by a strip of grass, each with two floral motifs and a flower basket on them, a butterfly hovering above them. There is a central stag below the house with a tree, rabbit, bird and flower basket to his left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central rose basket which has a small owl, oak tree, dog and rosebush to each side with small flowers dotted between them. There is a floral garland to the left and right of the central rose basket's top most blooms, with Mary Ann's name contained within the one on the left and the date of February 24 contained in the one on the right. There is a small bird standing near each of the floral garlands, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep arcaded floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with an area of staining in the lower left corner. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few areas of damage in the outer floral border and some smaller ones to the field of the linen. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 13 1/4" x 17"
