Rare and very beautiful, ca1880’s Native American Sioux Indian Bead Decorated Hide Panel / Cuff. This outstanding late 19th century Sioux Beaded Panel measures approx. 7” tall and 6 1/2” across at the top edge. It is double sided and made in the form of a “cuff” – possibly the bottom panel of a Sioux Legging or the beaded panel from a Sioux Tobacco Bag. The bead decoration is very beautiful as can be seen in the scans below.
It appears that this B...eaded Panel was removed a very long time ago from a Sioux Legging or Tobacco Bag.
This wonderful Bead Decorated Sioux Hide Panel is sinew sewn and made of a thick buffalo hide with a beautiful design featuring images of tepees. The beading is lazy stitched and executed using colors of cobalt, red white-heart, translucent periwinkle, translucent dark green, greasy yellow and chalk white.
The Sioux Beaded Panel offered here is unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It is NOT a reproduction or modern recreation but an original Sioux Panel repurposed from a Tobacco Bag or Legging and crafted in the late 19th century. This rare and very beautiful, ca1880’s Sioux Bead Decorated Hide Panel is in very good condition. The Hide substrate is well preserved – slightly stiff due to the thickness of the hide but without damage or repairs. The beadwork is beautiful and generally well preserved with a small amount of scattered loss and with some of the lazy stitched loops loose at one end (see the scans below). As stated above, it is most likely that this Panel was originally the beaded panel area of a Sioux Tobacco Bag or the bottom panel of a legging. This repurposing of the Tobacco Bag or Legging to form the Panel offered here happened a VERY long time ago.
