EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER INITIALLED A. S - 1802

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler initialled A.S - 1802. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched at the centre with a charming three storey red house which has a set of railings to its left and right, each with a tree and fruit tree at the side. There is a central rose beneath the house which is flanked by a carnation and flower garden and a red lion. The middle section of the linen is stitched with... a central floral edged plaque which has a floral motif at each side and contains the following verse

The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket which has a pair of squirrels standing on top and a flower plus bird and floral motif on either side, a stag by the flower on the left and a doe by the one on the right. There is a folly/gatehouse building beneath the fruit basket with a bird perched on each of its three towers then flanked by a flower basket and tree with the initials A.S and the date of 1802 to the left and right of its walls. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep meandering floral border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges and paler to the field from where the sampler is over a stretcher. There are also a few small areas of damage, the largest being on the lower left side of the outside edge of the linen. One is able to see through the damage that those situated on the field of the linen have backing cloth behind them whilst those on the edges are sitting directly on the stretcher. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks look good but they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a later, mid 19th century mahogany frame with satinwood stringing around the edges. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 12 3/4" x 15 3/4" (sight size) and 14 3/4" x 17 3/4" including the frame.
