SMALL MID 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE AND CAIN & ABEL SAMPLER INITIALLED SHG - C. 1845

Mid 19th century sampler initialled S.H.G. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier. Although the sampler does not bear the full name of its creator, I am selling another sampler which I acquired at the same time which is by Susanah Greenwood. The stitch work on both pieces is very similar and with the samplers being together I think it is likely that this initialled piece is also by Susanah. Worked in wool on a close weave ...gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a delightful two storey red house which has a cockerel above its roof, a man and his wife to his left and right. The man has a heart below him with floral motifs, a tree and bird on a blossom branch to his side, whilst his wife has a flower beneath her with a bird standing to its right, a floral motif above him. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with the following biblical quotation

This biblical scene has been recreated in the lower section of the gauze with the brothers standing central with Cain brandishing a large curved knife at Abel. Cain has trees, a tulip, rose, floral urn and flower basket to his side whilst Abel has a tree, floral motifs, a rose and flower bowl at his side. There is a central-ish pasture below the brothers which has sheep grazing on it with a bird and dog to its left and a stag, crown and lion to its right. The stitch work around the stitch work down to Cain and Abel is surrounded by a meandering floral border whilst SHG's initials are stitched beneath the pasture.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some very small marks and a faint dark area around the bird etc in the top right corner. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool look good but they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality rosewood frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with the odd scratch and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 9 3/4" x 9 3/4" (sight size) and 15" x 15" including the frame.
