Small mid 19th century sampler by Susanah Greenwood. Susanah has stitched her name as Susnah but I think she has accidentally missed out an A. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earlier.Worked in wool on a close weave gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. Susanah's name is stitched at the centre of the top of the gauze with a delightful two storey red house to the left which has a ...heart above it and a flower basket nearby, whilst the gauze to the left of Susanah's name contains a cluster of red roses both in bud and full bloom. The middle section of gauze is stitched with a central floral urn which has a flower basket, tree, tulip and bird to its left and two floral motifs to its right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with at the centre with a poignant image of Christ upon the cross, which has Jesus Crucified above its crossbar. There are floral motifs and flower baskets to the left side of the crucifix and floral motifs, a bird and stag to its right, then the stitch work down to Jesus is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The bottom edge of the gauze is stitched with a central sheep with two trees, a bird, dog and flower to his left and two trees, a dog and a red bird to his right.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some faint brown patches and a smudge between Susanah's name. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool look good but they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality rosewood frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with the odd scratch and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is also a small loss to the veneer on the bottom edge and another on the top left corner.Measures 9 3/4" x 9 3/4" (sight size) and 15" x 15" including the frame.
I AM ALSO SELLING A SAMPLER WHICH I ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS SUSANAH'S WHICH IS SIGNED WITH THE INITIALS S.H.G. THE STITCH WORK ON BOTH PIECES IS VERY SIMILAR AND WITH BOTH SAMPLERS BEING TOGETHER I THINK IT IS LIKELY THEY ARE BOTH THE WORK OF SUSANAH.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
