Original Description:
British SAS Special Air Service The Malayan Scouts shoulder patch .   Embroidered on felt.   Real one.
I am starting off with his collection of foreign airborne and special forces units.  Will work my way to US WW2 to Vietnam as time goes along.  All patches are removed from the albums and may have glue residue on the back.  I am trying to make it fair to every interested party so please don't ask to sell offline. All auctions wi...ll run their course.

All items I am listing are from the collection of close to 5000 Airborne patches and insignia of my father-in-law, Retired LTC.  James R. Harrington, and are genuine and vintage to the period posted   . Not modern made copies. These books have not been added to or even opened in almost 20 years.  To my knowledge there are no reproductions or fakes here. He would not have had those in his collection for fillers and told that to me and to any one he dealt with many times. He prided himself on having the genuine article or nothing and was not interested in "Fakes, Phonies, or Fantasy pieces ".  Please compare to any similar item seen on E-bay and you will see the difference between a reproduction ( particularly 98% of all Vietnam pocket patches, even though listed in original category) and the  genuine article.  He acquired the majority of these from someone who had been in that unit and I have most paperwork to show that.
He put this collection together over a 50+ year period from the late 1940's up until approx. the late 1990's. He started with the items he had acquired during his service in WW2 , continued up through his retirement from the Reserves in 1973 and kept on going. He bought sold and traded with dealers, collectors and military friends he had made all over the world. He frequented many gun shows and asmic shows throughout the years. He belonged to several collecting organizations such as Chutes and Daggers and ASMIC. Plus he did this all before the internet when you had to write letters , send a check and wait.  Remember those days? I first met him at a local surplus store in the late 1970's. Find someone who knew him and ask them if I am making any of this up.     During his military career he saw service in many theaters . In WW2 he started in the NY State Guard 8th Infantry at age 16 as a private. When his unit was federalized he signed up for OCS and became a Second Lieutenant at eighteen years of age and was assigned to the 342nd Infantry Regiment of the 86th Division when that unit was being redeployed to the Pacific Theater. Upon arrival in the Philippines he was temporarily  assigned to the reconstituted Philippine Scouts. He went to jump school in 1948.  In the 1950's , now a Capt.,   he was part of the 107th RCT and he was on the US Army Rifle Team.  He competed in one particular match against the British Army Team and they won and I have shown the picture of him meeting Queen Elizabeth when she came to congratulate the team on it's victory.  He became interested in the newly formed Special Forces and joined up. He was part of the 320th SFOD, 7th Gp., 11th Gp., 16th ( yes , there was a 16th Group, later redesignated) and the 19th Group where he would rise to the rank of Lt. Colonel and be in command of the unit based at the Armory in White Plains New York. During the early part of his time with Special Forces his assignment was to help organize and train the Airborne Forces of Ethiopia when Haille Selassie was in power. In civilian life he worked for Domino Sugar.
Pictures of my father-in-law and his collection books are NOT part of sale but included to show him and extent of collection. You are bidding on the featured item only.

It may sound like baloney but two articles I have found give him credit for being the inventor of Challenge Coins in the Army. One from the Houston Herald July 2, 2007 and the other from The Medal Collector by Ronald Fischer.  He was also instrumental with others in the adoption of subdued insignia.   Google the man yourself if you have any doubts.
He passed in 2009 and it has taken this long to get around to cataloging , identifying and now listing his actual patch collection. He had all the info in his head. I have already dealt with and sold his rifle & pistol collection (75+), his foreign medal collection ( 200+), his German ( pre-WW1 to 1960's) belt buckle collection (70+), Captured war trophy Japanese items, Bayonet collection, uniforms, helmets, hats, Jump wings from all over the world, etc.  The list is endless. I am sure you think I'm full of it but you had to see it all to believe it. There were 8 complete T-10 Parachutes (main & reserve) in the attic, not to mention foot lockers, boxes, crates and garment bags full of items too.
He had started to work on a book about US Airborne patches and their history and sadly never finished it as he developed Alzheimer's toward the end of his life. I have his notes and  the unfinished manuscript.  He was buried with honors at Arlington National cemetery.
