MID 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, GARDEN, LION & VERSE SAMPLER ISABEL KELLY - 1848

Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Isabel Kelly - 1848. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central heart flanked by three sets of family initials with a crown the right then underlined with an undulating border which has a further set of family initials at each end. The following short verse is stitched beneath which has a floral motif to the right and is then underlined with a meander...ing floral border

The middle section of the linen is stitched at the centre with a charming red brick house with the steps leading from its front door edged on both sides with turkey stitch hedges with three flowers behind them. There is a stretch of grass below both hedges which has a fruit tree on each, a bird and stag to the left and right of their trunk and a tree standing nearby. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a small central turkey stitch lawn which has a wonderful lion standing on top and is then flanked by a colourful spray of flowers, each with a crown and bird in flight at their side. Isabel' s name and the date of 1848 are stitched below with a stretch of grass beneath which has a flower basket standing at the centre with an open tailed peacock, rabbit and flower bowl to each side. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker in places from where certain shades of the thread have bled. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool look good but they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality rosewood frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, a small amount of old veneer loss on the top right corner and a larger loss of approximately 2.5" on the bottom left corner which can be seen in the penultimate photo. There is also a small piece of glass missing in that corner but with the glass being original to the piece I thought it should be retained.
Measures 15" x 16 1/2" (sight size) and 20" x 21 1/2" including the frame.
