EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE & ADAM & EVE SAMPLER BY HARRIOT PRIEST AGED 12 1826

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Harriot Priest aged 12 - 1826. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse which has a diamond to the left and right of its title and a butterfly, flower and crown down each side

There is a central p...laque beneath the verse which contains Harriot's details and the date of 1826 and is then flanked by a bird plus tree and a floral urn. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches each figure with a squirrel and fruit basket at their side with a floral motif above the right side basket. The lower section of the linen is stitched with an impressive red brick country house which has an expanse of grass to the front with railings to both sides, each set with a single strawberry and a fruit tree to the side with a bird perched on top. The stretch of grass has deer, sheep and rabbits grazing on it with a farmer, crook in hand, standing in each corner. The top and side edges of the linen are then stitched with a deep honeysuckle border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some rust stains around the edges. The colours of the wool are good with bleeding to the writing and some of the darker stitch work. There is also a small area of stitch loss by the feet of the farmer standing on the right side. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Harriot first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is an area of damage to the bottom right corner of the linen and visible tack marks around the edges from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 16 1/2" x 23"
