A RARE antique 19th C. Uzbek Lakai tribe silk embroidered Ilgich fragment
DESCRIPTION: This rare antique silk embroidered fragment was made b...y the enigmatic Lakai tribe of Uzbek people of Central Asia. Dating to the late 19th Century, such talismanic embroideries were known as Ilgich and were made by the bride as dowry offerings and hung on tents for protection. It has beautiful chain-stitched embroidery on an indigo ground. The central motif is a classic Lakai design which is a combination of pomegranate and scorpion design, symbolising protection and fertility. It is a gorgeous work of textile art.
HISTORY: Living at the heart of the ancient silk route, the people of Central Asia produced some of the most beautiful silk textiles in history. During the economic boom of the 19th Century, the region became extremely wealthy and every tribe (both rural and urban) made lavish silk embroideries. The embroideries of the Uzbek Lakai Tribe is arguably one of the most unique and beautiful. The Lakai tribe were an enigmatic rural people who not only refused to be absorbed under the rule of the local kingdoms but later also resisted the Soviet invasion of 1920's, which forced them to flee as refugees to Afghanistan in first quarter of 20th century. Their independent nature reflects in their silk embroideries, which boast non-compromising archaic designs with shamanistic motifs as opposed the floral repertoires common amongst other groups. They made both functional embroideries (such as belts, hats, garments, and animal trappings) as well as talismanic embroideries (such as square or shield shaped hangings known as ilgich). Almost all of their embroideries were bridal dowry offerings and were considered to have protective powers. Over the past 50 years, the surviving Lakai embroideries have mesmerised collectors and a number of museum exhibitions have helped make them become highly collectible.
CONDITION: Though a fragment, it is close to full size. It is just missing a small part of the borders. Other than that it is in good antique shape. It is nicely edged and finished with the original Russian cotton lining.
