Original Description:
This is a very early Miller's patent ( 7/6/1875 basic patent - 8/22/1876 improvement ), Stanley # 48, 5/16" swing arm, tongue and groove plane. The plane has a swinging fence that allows the craftsman to produce a 5/16" tongue on the edge of a 3/4 to 1 1/4" board, and then rotate the fence 180 degrees, and cut the matching groove on another board without having to change any settings. Length of plane is 10 1/2"s ( changed to 8 3/4"s in 1937 ). This plane, once sharpened and set up, req...uired no time to change planes in order to switch from cutting tongues to cutting grooves. Planes were Japanned prior to 1898 with the earliest model having the Miller's Ivy design pointed handles and large knurled brass thumbscrews to secure cutters. ( fish scale pattern added in 1911 ) STANLEY is cast under the front knob on main body, and PAT. JULY 6, 1875. under the handle. ( found only on early Japanned planes ) Knob is RW, spring and washer are brass, with a steel spring loaded locking pin. Fence rotates 360 degrees left or right, and solidly lock into position front or rear. Plane has been restored to better than new condition with any rough castings smoothed, fence and main body were squared and flattened, lapped to 1200 grit, and refinished. Irons have been sharpened and stropped. This is a very unique old ( 145 years ) plane in quality collector condition. Shows no signs of wear, abuse, rust, pits, stains, chips, cracks. or owner's marks. The plane will make an excellent show piece, collection addition, or shop tool. Not many left this old and in this condition !!   Jim  S     Note: Former owner has sharpened both ends of the irons. I did not resharpen both ends. I do not think this is a good practice !! 1- I don't want 2 extremely sharp unguarded irons that close to my hands. 2- If you have to make some fine adjustments, you are going to tap on the ends of the irons and ruin the edge.
