USMC P42 Uniform
Item History & Price

For your consideration is a USMC P42 uniform identified to Sergeant Paul Warren Fesler. His initials and last name being stamped on the uniform at three locations (see pictures). Please note I can only find another P.W. Fesler on the USMC Muster Rolls for WW II. Sergeant Fesler enlisted into the Marine Corps Reserve on May 1st of 1939. In late 1940 he went on active duty at Camp Elliott San Diego California where the 2nd Marin...e Defense Battalion was formed. In 1943 his unit participated in the Tarawa campaign. During this period of service, Sergeant Fesler was assigned to “A” Battery which was a 40 MM antiaircraft artillery unit. His battery landed on Betio November 24th 1943 and stayed through January of 1944 defending Hawkins Field from over 19 Japanese air attacks.
Not long after leaving Betio, SGT Fesler was sent to Camp Lejune, NC where he became an antiaircraft artillery instructor. He was discharged on August 31, 1945.
As can be seen in the photos this uniform was worn hard. There are stains, overall wear and fading. The material around the upper back has been weakened by sun damage and has several non period repairs of tears in that area.
Although it’s impossible to 100 % verify that this uniform was worn during the Tarawa Campaign, it is highly likely that it was, making this a rare opportunity to add a very historical uniform to your collection. After Tarawa SGT Fesler left the Pacific returning to Camp Lejune NC to become an instructor. Along with the uniform are copies of over two dozen records related to this Marine. Among them are Marine Corps Muster Rolls which show his name, rank, unit of assignment, and location for that month. For the period when he was in combat, the location is shown as “in the field”.
One last item. There is a very small stamp in the collar which looks like 2 SW A B (please see pictures). I am not certain what this means but my best guess is 2nd Special Weapons A Battery which is how his unit is often listed on the USMC Muster Rolls.
