WELCOMETO SALLY’S DIARIES: Upfor auction today is a fabulous WWII photo album. I don’t know thename of the man who originally owned this album but it so historicalin so many ways. There 330 original photos, 40 souvenir type photos, along with 2 large photos and a few smaller photo postcards and thosewere taken by Alaska photographer, T. Davis. Most of the photos areof an area in China and then Alaska. I think most of them are blankon the back with no handwritten identification, b...ut then again I onlychecked about 10. However on one there was the handwritteninscription that said, “Here is a shot of me and my dog “Jumpy”.I named her that because she is so jumpy and lively. Tientsin China.February 47’” There are a lot that also have USMC on thetanks. There are also some very sad photos, at least 10, showingsome very gruesome scenes of dead Asian men on the beach. One seemsto have been shot in the head. Iwould say that the first several pages have the photos from China andthere are about 110 of those. Then the Alaska photos begin, at leastI think the photos showing the ships and the men sailing on them, arewhen the crew is heading to Alaska but I can’t say that for sure.There are about 150 of the Alaska photos. Now I’m not positiveabout either of the locations but everything seems to point to thedirection. Including a newspaper clipping I found on one of thepages, and I quote……“ArcticIce Floes Halt Point Barrow Fleet. Point Barrow, Alaska. Aug. 3rd.An eight ship navy convoy’s race to bring a year’s supplies tothe top of the North American continent was blocked today, at leasttemporarily, by the grinding arctic ice pack. Dependent on the 42, 000tons of cargo carried by the fleet are the navy’s oil explorationbases and native village on the upper rim of Alaska. The narrowArctic sea channel was sealed by north winds yesterday, less than twoweeks after the latest breakup since 1938.” Mostof the photos are placed on the album pages with their corner mountsand can be easily removed. Each page measures about 10” x 12” andthe photos vary in sizes.
