Flight Deck Crew Helmet
Original WW2 US Navy flight deck crew helmet with "rigger made" modifications, features as follows:Helmet: Green cotton poplin construction with adjustable chin strap, khaki goggle straps, and light green cotton trim and seam binding. No size or contract labels present but is a small size. Has been modified by hand sewing the visor from a tan poplin flight crew cap to the front and the addition of black bakelite ANB-H-1 radio receivers with black rubber and c...hamois cushions sewn directly to the helmet. Receivers are UTAH-CHICAGO mfg with dark brown cloth covered wiring harness and red plastic PL-254 plug. Helmet is dirty from use with fraying to the cotton trim, and the lower left rear seam has become unstitched [can easily be repaired]. One frayed spot to cloth covering on wiring harness [see photo].Goggles: AN-6530 goggle frame, nickel plated steel construction with green polarized glass lenses and tan elastic head band. Frame is marked AN6530 on hinge, CHAS. FISCHER mfg markings on underside of left eye piece. Rubber cushion is gone, with remnants stuck to lenses and frame [will clean easily]. Frame is tarnished from years of use and storage, with light surface rust to lower edges. Head band is dirty from age and use but no fraying or other damage, and most of the elasticity is gone.Green color was worn by catapult/arresting gear officers and crew on aircraft carrier flight decks. Definitely one of the more interesting modifications of WW2 flight headgear I've seen. Came from the estate of a US Naval aviator in the Dallas area who served in WW2, Korea and through the late 1950s. Easily restored piece for your flight headgear collection and is in good condition.
