Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Margaret Gerrard. Margaret tells us that she was born on April 21st 1807 which dates this piece to c.1820 or slightly earlier. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central two storey red house with a garden area to the front and flowers rambling up its side walls. There is a black dog standing to each side of the garden with a kneeling figure above th...e dog on the left and a stag above the dog on the right. A haloed figure is floating above the house with a heralding cherub to his left and right and the following verse worked between the three figures
Let the most blessed be my guide if it be his holy willUp to his gate, into his fold, up to his holy hill
Margaret's details are stitched below the house with a rose basket to their left and a floral motif to their right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a stretch of grass which has a red lion passant and recumbent red stag at its centre. A man and his dog stand to the side of the lion whilst his wife, crook in hand, and her three sheep stand at the side of the stag. There is a floral urn standing in the middle of the top edge of the grass with a red bird and floral urn to its left and a blue bird and rose basket to its right. The top and side edges are then stitched with a deep honeysuckle border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges which also have some small patches of old glue residue. The colours of the thread are good with some stitch loss to the central urn standing on the stretch of grass, some to the recumbent stag, some on the left side of the grass and the odd stitch elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Margaret first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 17 1/2" across x 16 1/2"
