Let the most blessed be my guide if it be his holy willUp to his gate, into his fold, up to his holy hill
Margaret's details are stitched below the house with a rose basket to their left and a floral motif to their right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a stretch of grass which has a red lion passant and recumbent red stag at its centre. A man and his dog stand to the side of the lion whilst his wife, crook in hand, and her three sheep stand at the side of the stag. There is a floral urn standing in the middle of the top edge of the grass with a red bird and floral urn to its left and a blue bird and rose basket to its right. The top and side edges are then stitched with a deep honeysuckle border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker around the edges which also have some small patches of old glue residue. The colours of the thread are good with some stitch loss to the central urn standing on the stretch of grass, some to the recumbent stag, some on the left side of the grass and the odd stitch elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Margaret first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 17 1/2" across x 16 1/2"
