EARLY 19TH CENTURY RED HOUSE, WINDMILLS & VERSE SAMPLER BY HANNAH TIPPETT - 1824

Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Hannah Tippett aged 14 - 1824. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. Hannah's details and the date of 1824 are stitched across the top edge of the linen with a diamond and heart to the left and right of the date plus the numbers 1 through to 14 next to the heart. There is a central plaque beneath containing the following short verse which has a crown and floral motif to its right side, whilst each side of... the plaque is stitched with a tree, carnation and flower

There is a central floral motif beneath the verse which has a crown and floral motif to each side and a floral urn below flanked by birds and a fruit basket. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey red house with flowers, a stag and a bird in flight to each side and a narrow plaque below which contains the words - This I have done that you might see what care my parents took of me - and has a bird standing to each side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket which has a floral urn, floral motifs, running dog and blue lion to each side and a rose basket beneath. The rose basket has a windmill to its left and right, each with a tethered dog and flora motif on either side. The top edge of the linen is then stitched with a meandering floral border whilst the other three sides are stitched with a narrow red and green border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a faint line running down the middle and the odd small faint stain. The colours of the wool are good with some small areas of stitch loss in the narrow outer border pattern and the odd stitch elsewhere. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.Measures 17 1/2" x 23"
