Mid 19th century sampler by Mary Ann Borton aged 12 - 1842. Worked in cotton on soft cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. Mary Ann's details and the date of 1842 are stitched across the top edge of the gauze followed by the name M.M.Tasker and the initials H.T. There is a central flower bowl beneath which has a flower bowl plus birds to its left and a floral motif and bird to its right. The topmost blooms of the central flower bowl have a ...floral motif, crown and diamond to their left and a butterfly and diamond to their right. There is a crested bird standing above the central flower bowl with a star and heart to his left and a floral motif and heart to his right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with an impressive Temple of Solomon which has a floral urn to the left and right of its outer towers. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering strawberry border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with general patches of staining from where certain shades of silk have bled, and the colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary Ann first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, the bottom and top edges of the gauze are frayed.Measures 16" across x 17" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING.
