Original Description:
Late 18th century linen and silk work sampler by M.A.Medcalf - 1794. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. There are three darning patches in the top and bottom section of the linen whilst M.A.Medcalf's name, that of her place of residence - Bocking - and the date of 1794 are stitched in the central area surrounded four small darning squares with a larger darning patch to each side. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, sli...ghtly darker in places, with a general scattering of stains. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.
