Antique English Gothic Salt Glaze Stoneware Pottery Pitcher T&R Boote
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:23492751 |
This gothic-styled piece displays a great level of molded detail in high relief. The white coloration of the earthenware promotes the illusion that the pitcher is carved from marble or porcelain rather than humble earthenware. Very striking!
The underside... of the pitcher is stamped with English registry marks indicating a production date of 1848. Also stamped is a depiction of a lion, a unicorn and a crown and the words, Honi soit qui mal y pense, the French maxim used as the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter.
This antique pitcher has a fine, tight crack from its base left of the handle to the neck, and a chip on same side of the handle, as well as a crack across the handle near its bottom juncture. As you can see from our photos, flaws are invisible from the right profile or front, and pitcher is clean inside and out, with beautifully crisp designs.
The pitcher is 8 1/2 inches high and 5 inches wide from spout to handle.
We have been told by a kind ebay member that "This jug was made by T&R Boote and is pictured in Henrywood's jug book."
