Original Description:
US Marine Corps Civil War discharge and USN discharge and Good Conduct Badge.
A rare and fascinating lot consisting of material from the Marine Corps and US Navy service of Charles Murray. He was born in Ireland, date unknown, and first enlisted for military service in the Marine Corps in August 1858, on board the USS St. Mary's in San Francisco for a four year enlistment. His enlisting officer was Lt. E. McDonald Reynolds. A copy of his enlistment paper is included&...nbsp;with the research.  At the time he claimed to have be born in Pennsylvania and to be twenty-two years old. The failure to mention his Irish birth wasn't usual at the time.
In January 1861, Murray was briefly transferred to the Marine Barracks at the Brooklyn Navy Yard before being transferred to HQ USMC later that month. In May he was transferred to the USS Mississippi where he would serve until July 1862.  He was discharged at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Marine Barracks in August 1862, where he received the discharge offered here. It is signed by Colonel Commandant John Harris, who held the post between 1859 and 1864.
While on the USS Mississippi, Murray participated in the passage of Admiral Farragut's fleet past the rebel forts of Jackson and St Philip in April. Two Marines of the Mississippi's detachment were killed in action during the passage.
After his Marine Corps discharge in August, Murray enlisted for one year in the US Navy, in September. He was rated as the Master-at-Arms on the USS Wyandotte, a not uncommon rating for previous Marines, and served in the Potomac and Norfolk area until his discharge in Sept.1863.
He had later service in the Navy, at one point receiving a Good Conduct Badge, but due to the common name, I've never been able to isolate him. Included with the lot is an 1883 note from the Army's Adjutant General of the Department of Kentucky sending the two discharges offered here to the War Department AG's office for transmission to Murray. Apparently he received them. This document is included with the lot.
His GCB would have been earned for an enlistment between 1870 and the early 1880's, and it's likely Murray received his lost discharges quickly because he was still in the service in 1883. His GCB shows wear, and numerous pin holes from the straight pin used to attach it to the uniform, so multiple enlistments are pretty certain.
The Marine Corps discharge has been professionally framed with acid-free paper and UV protective glass. Included is a binder with my 20+ years of research on theses items. (The privately made New Orleans campaign streamer is also included)   The frame is appx. 20x24 inches, and together with the binder of research, and packaging, it will weigh in at 7-8 pounds. I cannot get a good estimate of shipping cost until the auction is over and I have the zip code of the winning bidder.

Check the photos for details and condition. I do not accept offers, just bid what you're willing to pay. Shipped within the US by USPS, method of shipment to be determined after the auction is over.
Please ask questions before bidding and as soon as possible as I may not always be home to get your message. Also, if payment has not been received before June 6th, I will not be able to ship before June 12th, as I will be away from my office for several days. Please keep this in mind.
Thanks for looking.
