Original Description:
Small early 19th century silk work c.1810. This little silk work is just delightful with fine quality stitching and paint work throughout. The scene is a charming one in which a seated young maiden, deep in thought,   is leaning against the trunk of a tree, a flute beside her. She is leaning her face on one hand whilst in the other she holds the leash of her very sweet pet goat who is standing by her side. There is a river to the front of the couple and a building, fields and... trees in the background. The background silk has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly stained in places with two darker streaks in the upper left quadrant. There is an area of jagged splitting to the silk by the left side of the maiden's face approximately one inch long, a split running down through her face, several smaller ones running across her bodice and a few very small splits elsewhere. The colours of the silk appear good with areas of stitch loss and perishing in the trees which show on the photographs as a sort of dark blue colour where the silk has stained the backing silk. This is best seen in the photo of the upper right quadrant. The silk work is contained within its seemingly original hand carved gilded frame which has several chips around the edges and retains much of its original gilding. The last photo is of the reverse of the frame and shows an old piece of card has been taped over the centre, presumably to protect the silk work. There is also a label from "The Mart" in Bromley, possibly where the silk work was once for sale.Measures 6" x 8" (sight size) and 8" x 10"
