Original Description:
Photos one throughthree are of my main specimen plants growing in a California greenhouse thisyear. Fourth through sixth photos show the plant for sale, plants in pure NZ sphagnummoss in a 4"/10 cm cm plastic basket.Squamellariakajewskii (formerly Hydnophytum kajewskii) is one of the most striking and rarecaudexed plants in the world. Indeed, an online reference to the plant by theIrish National Botanical Garden notes that this species has, “…one of the mostelaborate and bizarre st...ructures in the entire plant kingdom.” Native to theSolomon Islands, it has long been sought by public gardens, collectors of tropical“fat” plants and specialized ant plant collectors. Beginning in 2010, multiplecostly attempts at bringing this species into cultivation from BougainvilleIsland-sourced seed were made by Asian, US and European collectors, but wereonly met with limited success in early 2013. During the course of growing thismaterial out in greenhouses in the US and Germany, it became apparent that thisspecies and its closest relatives, while technically heterostylous are functionally dioecious, that is to say theyusually have separate male and female plants. I was very fortunate in ending upwith a pair of females and a single male from the seedlings grown out from 2013and 2014 seed, and was able to produce the world’s first F1artificially-propagated seedlings of this species in 2015. This species doeswell in very bright bay windows and can be grown to full size in one withenough patience. Suitable for large, well-lit terraria as small plants and invivaria housing small reptiles and amphibia from Australia and New Guinea. Ofthe many remarkable ant plant species, this is one of the very best for growerswith limited space. Somewhat drought-tolerant, but prefers uniformly moist, notwet, growing conditions. The plants offeredare young, vigorously growing stock generated from seed from my own parentstock. These are near flowering-sized plants., but are not sexed. Ants are notrequired for successful cultivation of this species and the plant in mycollection do not house ant colonies. All plants offered are greenhouse grown on benches in the San FranciscoBay Area, California.Shipping: Plants will be shipped via USPS Priority Mail withtracking number for physical addresses within three working days of receipt ofpayment, weather permitting. 72-hour heat packs are available for an additionalUSD 6.00 each.Wherever possible, plants will beshipped in plastic pots or baskets.
