Offered for sale is a pair of Heathkit AS-1230 floor standing speakers. Designed by JBL using JBL made drivers. Made to produce accurate sound that is virtually unchanged from that which was originally recorded. It features a 12 inch aquaplas laminated-cone woofer, a 5 inch high-polymer laminated-cone mid-range and a 1 inch pure titanium dome tweeter.
The speaker system is ported to extend the low-frequency response, allowing it to operate with negligible distortion and startling re...alism.
The cabinet is finished in a high quality oiled-walnut veneer. Its high-density particle board construction further increases the acoustic response of the system.
Designed by a joint team of Heath and JBL engineers and using the highest-quality materials, the AS-1230 will provide a lifetime of excellent and enjoyable performance. They were introduced in 1989 and had an MSRP of $350 each in kit form. These were purchased and built by an antique radio restorer from Uniontown, PA, just south of Pittsburgh. I purchased them from the builders widow. The only issues they had were one of the grills was torn and both woofers needed re-foamed. I installed new grill cloth on both speakers, matching the dark brown original color as close as possible. Re-foamed both woofers and extensively checked for voice coil rub. There was none. They are in excellent condition, the cabinets almost look new showing just some very minor signs of wear and age. The drivers are in excellent condition and they all produce sound.
Full specifications are: Frequency range - 45 Hz to 23, 000 Hz (@ -10 dB); Frequency response - 60 Hz to 20, 000 Hz (@ -3dB); Impedance - 8 ohms nominal; Recommended Amplifier power - 10 to 200 watts; Sensitivity - 91 dB(@ 2.83 volts, 1 meter); Cross over frequencies - 800 Hz, 4000 Hz; Dimensions - (H x W x D, inches) 40 x 13 7/8 x 10 3/8; Weight - 54 lbs.
These are very rare speakers. There are none currently listed on eBay. In fact, I can't recall seeing them in the last five years that I've been selling on eBay.
They are extremely high and heavy speakers that will have to be shipped in separate boxes weighing about 62 lbs. each. My total estimated cost for shipping, packing material and selling fees is $250 to $350, depending on the buyers location. It will take me about 3 hours to properly pack them. This cost and time is a very significant portion of my BIN offering.
Also included in the sale is the original combination assembly and owner manual. It's in nearly perfect condition.
