Original Description:
There is a lot of confusion regarding Schneider Kreuznach's Componon and Xenon lenses.  Some of these lenses were intended for movie use, some for macro photography, and others for enlarging work.  Adding to the confusion is that some of these lenses can be used for more than one purpose!

Schneider's Xenon lenses are most often encountered as Cine lenses with movie camera mounts.  But a few are found with non-movie mounts, and these were obviously not designed for... movie cameras.  A few were 28mm lenses.

Their Componon lenses come in a wide variety of mount sizes from 25mm to 90mm threads, but are most often seen in the 39mm (Leica) thread size -- so obviously designed for enlarging use.  But a few are found with #0 shutter mounts, and these were obviously not designed for enlargers.  A few were 28mm lenses.

There is a rare duo of Xenon lenses that fall somewhere in-between these two groups -- the 28mm f2.0 and 35mm f2.0 Xenons with 25mm enlarging threads.  They were obviously not made for movie cameras, and they look exactly like their Componon 28mm f4.0 and 35mm f4.0 cousins -- which also came with 25mm enlarging threads.

This auction is for one from this unusual Xenon lens duo -- the beyond rare multi-coated, Schneider Kreuznach Xenon 28mm f2.0 lens.

There were Xenon 28mm f2.0 cine lenses -- see the lens on the right in the second photo -- but this isn't one of them.  It's the one on the left.

Instead, this Xenon 28mm f2.0 looks surprisingly like the Schneider Componon 28mm f4.0 lenses.  These came in two varieties -- see the third photo.  From left to right are:
the M-Componon 28mm f4.0 for macro work with a 29.5mm rear thread for use on large format cameras with a #0 shutter (Schneider used a non-f-stop numbering system on this lens for the aperture settings)
the Componon 28mm f4.0 for enlarging work with a 25mm rear thread
and the Xenon 28mm f2.0 for BOTH enlarging AND macro work with a 25mm rear threadThe Xenon 28mm f2.0 MERGES the Componon 28mm 4.0 AND the M-Componon 28mm f4.0 WITH A MUCH FASTER APERTURE!!!  AND it can be used for enlarging work OR macro-photography -- OR BOTH!!!

This lens is the perfect subminiature enlarging lens.  The 28mm enlarging lens was designed for subminiature formats such as 18x24mm (half-frame), 14x21mm (Tessina), 13x17mm (Kiev), 12x17mm (Minolta), 110 (Instamatic), 14x14mm (Hit), and 10x14 (16mm).  But it can also be used with even smaller formats such as Minox and even 8mm.  This Xenon 28mm features an incredibly fast f2.0 maximum aperture -- TWO full f-stops faster than the typical 28mm f4.0.  The f2.0 maximum aperture produces a very bright image on the easel.  This is very helpful when using a grain analyzer.  In addition, it is a big deal when making big prints, and a HUGE deal when making HUGE prints.  The narrower depth-of-focus at f2.0 assures PERFECT focusing.  The six-element design assures optimum results in color work!

It has click stops on each full f-stop.  It has a SIX-element, four-group design with f-stops to f16.  It's optimum magnification is 20X but it is perfectly at home with other magnifications.  It does not have an illuminated aperture scale (that makes it great for macro use -- see below), click-stop over-ride, or a preset aperture.  It has a five blade diaphragm.  It weighs 2 ounces (55 grams), diameter is 1.5" (40mm), length is 1" (25mm).  It's mounting thread is 25mm.

There are THREE options for attaching this lens to an enlarger:
A lensboard with a 25mm hole -- NOT included.  A 25mm jam nut / retaining ring IS INCLUDED. A lensboard with a 40mm hole -- NOT included.  A 39mm-to-25mm step-down ring / adapter IS INCLUDED.  A 39mm jam nut / retaining ring is NOT included.A lensboard with a threaded 39mm hole -- NOT includedNOT included.A 39mm-to-25mm step-down ring / adapter IS INCLUDED A 39mm-to-25mm step-down ring / adapter IS INCLUDED.Be aware that this lens is NOT a recessed design, but you might not need a recessed lensboard for your enlarger.  It all depends on how much your enlarger bellows can collapse.  If you do need a recessed board, these are cheap and easy to get for most enlargers.  A 1/2” (10mm) recession might be all you need.  That's what mine is -- for a Beseler 4x5 enlarger (see picture #9 -- NOT included).

While this lens can be used for enlarging work it is perfect as a macro/micro lens and can be used on any size film or digital camera with interchangeable lenses – from subminature / pocketable to 35mm to medium format to large format sheet / panel cameras. Depending on your setup and the amount of extension that you have available, you can go from about 1:1 life size to 30 times life size -- or higher!  The f2.0 maximum aperture produces a very bright image in the viewfinder / ground glass -- for EASY focusing, but like all lenses, it is best to stop down to about f8 during the exposure for the best possible resolution.  You might want to stop down even more to get more depth of field -- which is pretty darn thin at high magnifications.

But in order to use this lens as a micro or macro lens you will need a couple of things.  First, you will need a means of creating extension between the lens and your camera.  This can be a bellows or a set of extension tubes -- or both!  If your camera has a TTL (Through-the-Lens) meter, like most do, it will do the necessary exposure correction for you -- or you can do it yourself.  Secondly, you will also need an adapter to place this lens on your extension device.  The easiest way to do this is to purchase a Leica adapter for your camera.  Just about every camera company in the world made a Leica adapter and these are pretty easy to get and pretty inexpensive -- usually about $10-20.  A 25mm-to-39mm (Leica) step-down ring IS INCLUDED.

Photo #10 shows this Xenon lens, a 25mm-to-39mm adapter (INCLUDED), a Leica to camera adapter (NOT included), and a bellows (NOT included) and camera (NOT included).  Photo #11 shows them all together.

Photo #12 shows this Xenon lens attached to a 4x5 camera (NOT included) using a similar adapter -- in this case a Leica to Copal #1 adapter (NOT included).

The cameras and bellows are NOT included in this auction -- ONLY WHAT IS IN PHOTO #1.

This Xenon 28mm f2.0 is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition.  Although it is used, there are barely any signs of use.  The aperture is snappy and works like new with clear, clean stops at each f-stop.

The exterior has no nicks, scrapes, scratches, dents, corrosion, etc.  See photos.

The multi-coated glass is perfect.  No fungus, scratches, separation, nicks, discoloration, etc.

It comes with three important items:
