RARE A.S (August) Semmendinger EXCELSIOR Model 6 12 x 12 inch Plate Camera.1873.
Up for sale is an extremely rare A.S (August) Semmendinger, EXCELSIOR 6, 12 x 12 inch Plate Camera. We are selling this as a display camera and collectors camera. Although with some effort it could be a n...ice camera to shoot. Not sure how many of these were made but the Man himself is often spoken of as the father of the wet plate camera.
Semmendinger was a German immigtrant who began making cameras before the Civil War in 1859 and claimed to be the first to manufacture what he called a "photographic apparatus.
Semmendinger was also an early camera designer, and was awarded three United States patents related to camera making.
By the early 1870s, Semmendinger moved his family and business to New Jersey and purchased land just across the Hudson River in Fort Lee. where he was awarded his third United States Patent, No. 145, 020, for Photographic Plate-Holders, which I believe is where this camera got it's birth. It is dated November 1873 & 74.
This patent is for what Semmendinger titled his "Celebrated Silver Double Corners. It also has the unique front door.
This camera will need a some restoration. The screw that performs the swing is missing along with the screws that lock the track together on the bottom. The bellows is in good condition but may have a light leaks. It comes with the lens board and what appears to be an insert for smaller format plates. I didn't measure it but it appears to be approx 8x10.
