Not Ex-Lib.A remarkably fine copy of one of the first important first hand accounts of women civilians before the Fal...l of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. As Richard Harwell noted: "the Diary of Mary Chesnut remains the classic"; however, he notes this is one is also full of insight into the mind of Southern women during the war. The author was later identified as Mary Ann Webster Loughborough, the wife of a Confederate officer. The map on p. 59 is still present. Her account of how she took care of an Iowa wounded man as he wasted away with no hope of recovery. She writes how in desperation hoping against hope for deliverance from a Southern relief of the city, the women and children lived in caves dug out against the hills of the city.
