A Victorian quilt in the Honeycomb Flower Garden pattern. This is a very old pattern, w/examples dating back to the 1820's. Identification of the pattern in this quilt can be attributed to a February, 1835 edition of Godey's Lady's Book.Size - 68-1/2" x 77"This quilt has many "flowers" - each 11" x 11". Dark flowers, rich colors. The flowers are hexagons - each 2-1/4" x 2-1/4".Every "flowers" has a black silk center & is surrounded by 2 rings of hexagon... petals. Shades of red, sage, mauve, gray, blue, dark green, brown, gray. Most of the pieces are solid colors - but there is a brown plaid & a blue. cream gingham also.The borders (3" wide) & backing are a golden brown fabric w/a tiny woven pattern. This fabric actually looks like the type used in Victorian women's bodice jackets & skirts.Batting - thick.Hand-quilted w/10 stitches per inch. Every piece in every block is outlined w/quilting stitches. Every petal also has a quilted X in the center. Borders are quilted in a pattern of diagonal lines.Condition - there is a total of 47 flowers. 9 have damage - primarily splitting of the black silk centers. Backing has 2 small rips.
