Chinese Antique Bronze ‘Lion’ Scroll Weight, Late Ming to Qing dynasty
A bronze scroll weight used to weigh down the ends of a scroll painting. Finely cast in the form of a recumbent lion with its head turned to its right, along with the curled tail. The eyes are alert showing an intense gaze, its mane finely marked with incisions and picked out in red pigment. As well as the creation of the ‘three perfections’ (poetry, paintings, and calligraphy) &...nbsp;a key aspect of life as a literati was the appreciation and study of these pursuits. Scroll weights, often found in the form of animals, would have been used to weigh down a paper scroll, allowing the scholars to quietly reflect on the contents before them.
