Original Description:
Mid 19th century sampler by Hellen Milne aged 11. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c. 1850 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with  neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns followed by two rows of family initials. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit tree which has a bird perc...hed on top, another bird standing to its right and a rabbit to its left. The rabbit has a floral motif, strawberry and flower basket at his side whilst the standing bird has a flower basket, open tailed peacock and bird to his side. The bird on top of the tree has a floral motif, tulip and green bird to his left and a floral motif and rose basket to his right. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a delightful two storey red house, its pathway leading down to a green which has a red brick wall on each side, a carnation spray at both ends.  There is female figure standing to the left side of the house, a small dog, floral motif and fruit basket to its right and Hellen's name and age running across the bottom edge.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some small speckled stains and a paler area running down the lower left side. The colours of the wool are good with some shades having mellowed more than others over the years. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hellen first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of paper down the left side edge of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 10 1/2" x 17 1/4"
