A bronze scroll weight used to weigh down the ends of a scroll painting. It comes in the shape of two boys wearing decorated robes of which each one alternately lies on his back or on his belly depending in which direction the weight is turned. They are joined in a clever way to give the illusion that there are four boys (puzzle weight). It is speculated that the two individuals c...ould depict the story of the Hehe Erxian twins. Either way, this ‘good luck’ symbol, known as 'Four-fold Happiness', is frequently given to newlyweds with the wish that they will have many children.

Condition
The condition is fine, consistent with the estimated age and the material used. There is a low profile casting line down the piece, common in such objects of small size. The pictures cover all aspects of this. Further informationAs well as the creation of the ‘three perfections’ — poetry, paintings, and calligraphy — a key aspect of life as a literati was the appreciation and study of these pursuits. Scroll weights, often found in the form of animals, would have been used to weigh down a paper scroll, allowing the scholars to quietly reflect on the contents before them.
