This is a rare antique wooden Victorian bottle opener for a particular type of vulcanite screw-in stopper with a chisel shaped thumb piece. This stopper was a clever improvement on the standard round vulcanite bottle stoppers invented by Frederic George Riley in 1885. The thumb piece was smaller than the overall diameter which enabled automatic bottle filling machines to apply and screw in the top as part of the process. I have shown a bottle with this stopper to illustrate the applica...tion of the opener but only the wooden opener is for sale. The opener is nicely marked "Please Replace Stopper" as they were used for fizzy drinks. It is in very good condition and measures 1.5 inches diameter and is almost 3/4 inch deep.
