Franklin Library leather edition of "The Confessions of Saint Augustine, " Translated by Edward B. Pusey, Illustrated with Renaissance Paintings, a Limited edition, one of the 25th ANNIVERSARY OF THE WORLD'S GREAT BOOKS series, published in 1980. Bound in deep burgundy leather, the book has matching French moire silk end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in Very Good/near FINE condition---except for three rubs of gnawed spots on bottom of ...front board. [See photos.] Other than the three rubs, the book is near FINE. Augustine, who lived from 354--430 A.D., was born in Roman Africa, the son of a pagan father and a Catholic mother. Augustine received a classical education, but was fired for philosophy and logic. However, when he found faith, he hungered and thirsted for righteous living---an inspirational account. According to his contemporary, JEROME, Augustine "established anew the ancient Faith." After his baptism and conversion to Christianity in 387, Augustine developed his own approach to philosophy and theology, accommodating a variety of methods and perspectives. Believing that the grace of Christ was indispensable to human freedom, he helped formulate the doctrine of original sin and made seminal contributions to the development of just war theory.
