Ironwood CarvingRoosterThis is an ironwood carving by the indigenous Seri people of the Sonoran desert of Mexico. It is carved out of the wood of the Olneya Tesota tree or Desert Ironwood. Ironwood is a very dense, desert wood, which is difficult to carve but has an exceptional finish when skillfully worked. In recent years the supply of raw ironwood has diminished and the tree is currently protected by the Mexican government.
This is a beautiful carving of a rooster. It measur...es 11 inches long, 7 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Weighs a substantial 2 pounds, 15 ounces of ironwood. In excellent condition.
