Presented today is this beautiful Old Style Hopi Kachina doll, depicting Hemsona, the Hair Cutting Kachina. The Hemsona is a racing Kachina, and physically cuts off the hair of slow runners (he literally runs with scissors!). Standing 6 inches tall, he is carved by the young and very talented Theron Talashoma. I had the immense pleasure of working with this young man for the last 5 years. He was introduced to me by Phillip Shelton, and is his nephew. Theron is fascinated with the... Old Style figures, and he brings an incredible “wildness” to his Kachina dolls, as if this were a figure which reposed in a sacred cave for centuries. His work is incredibly fresh and sincere, and I believe he is truly a young artist to watch.
