WHY CALLED KUBA SKIRTS?It is called skirts because they were worn on white or black skirt by Women (Later Men wore too in ceremonies). The panels were usually wrapped around the waist and secured with a belt.
TRIBES USED KUBA SKIRTS IN?Originally such long panels were prepared for death rituals. Later it was adopted for all cultural ceremonies- ritual dance & masked performance, child birth, magical & witchcraft attire, and other various gatherings of clans.
CLAN MUTUALLY PREPARED THE CLOTH The men (prepared base cloth) and women (embroidery & applique) both used traditional skills to cultivate fibers, extracted colors from tropical trees, and cultural motifs, not only to give the panel structure, texture, cultural message, but also to bring a visual effect in their ceremonies.
MATERIALSSisal fibresCowry shellsTwine fibersExtracted dyes from tropical trees & plants
DESIGNS & PATTERNSThe panels would have a linear continuous embroidery throughout, or linear embroidery on borders only. The interior are embroidered with traditional motifs, patches, and geometrical symbols. In the interior short fiber strands are weaved until a raised pile (surface like plush appearance and feel) is achieved. Just like African music would go off-beat in between, they incorporated this behaviour to the designs & patterns too, a pattern would break at any point, then skipped & started again or completely goes off track like their music, starts another design, and can end a pattern before panel ends.
COLOR VARIATIONColor variation will appear due to the use of natural dyes from extracts of plants & other organic mixtures.
HOW TO REMOVE CREASES & WRINKLES?The cloth is always unequal on borders because of natural fiber strands and made by hand weaving technique. Therefore, creases & wrinkles will appear, but the cloth is not fragile, can be pinned completely flat when mounted. Tough creases, if any, can be removed by placing the affected area in the middle of two flat pieces of solid material then G-clamp the solids, OR, easy way soak a sponge in normal water, apply to the creases/wrinkles, then very gently iron from the back. For extra care, put a polyester or cotton fabric beneath the electric iron when ironing.
Total respect to their cloth which is prepared with so much patience taking several days to finally complete one piece.
Congo is fighting against poverty, for several years it has been politically unstable, and civil wars has made the economic conditions even worst.
FAIR PRICEMy price will be fair so that you can acquire the piece and we can all join hands to encourage them to make more as this is their livelihood.
