Beautiful hand-made, original Russianhand-painted lacquer box from the village of Kholui. The painting depicts theancient monasteries of Uglich. The box is signed on the lower front in Cyrillicwith the title “Uglich”, the village name “Kholui” and the artist’s name “S.Gurunova”. This is a famous and popular subject and is featured in Lucy Maxym's book "Russian Lacquer, Legends and Fairy Tales" (see last photo). The boxis from the Soviet USSR (pre-1991) and is signed “Ma...de in USSR” in gold painton the bottom. This beautiful piece of art is in excellent conditionwith no cracks or chips.
