Hopewell Bird Effigy Platform Pipe Artifact Native American Indian. Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.This is ex Bernard Conger Collection who was a 3rd generation collector and he was featured in Who’s Who of Indian Relics-Vol. No. 7. This was purchased at his estate sale.I have studied this piece and believe it to be of a “Carolina Parakeet” which was the only known parrot species in North America and they went extinct in the early 1900’s. The figure here has... a parrot type beak. These birds were hunted to extinction for the use of their tail feathers for decorative and ceremonial purposes. In this pipe the tail feathers are missing which may explain the scowled look on the beak. This was expertly restored as many such pieces were ritually purposely destroyed. Material appears to be a light colored soapstone.
